OUR HISTORY
Pastor Sam Goins and his family moved to Williamsburg/James City County, the summer of 1995, to start a new church they would later name, James City Community Church. The first service was held April 1996 on Easter. The church met at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School. In 1999, as the church continued to grow, it relocated to a warehouse behind Ewell Station Shopping Center. In 2002 after focusing on the Prayer of Jabez, God grew JCC's boundaries so relocation was necessary. After renovating the lobby and one of the four theater spaces for the auditorium the former Carmike Theater in the Monticello Shopping Center became the new home for JCC.
During the fall of 2002, JCC participated with 1500 other churches and Saddleback Community Church in the 40 Days of Purpose. This 40 Days helped the church refocus and recommit to being a Purpose Driven Church. We started 13 small groups and baptized 15 adults during the 40 Days of Purpose. We began to implement with new excitement the assimilation process for Purpose Driven Churches. This process includes Purpose classes which we call TeamLife 101 through 401. Each class asks for a commitment by the participant which helps to empower them to live a Godly life.
In 2003 Adventure Bay, our children's ministry, began. Their theater was renovated to look like a tropical getaway complete with beach scenes, palm trees and sand! The captain, his first mate and the crew teach the children in a way that brings the bible to life.
In March of 2004, we called Mike Cooke to join our ministry staff. Mike is gifted in the area of teaching and administration. He and his wife Lynda have a passion for strong marriages and we have seen God use them greatly in strengthening individuals walk with Christ. at JCC.
In February 2006, the youth attended a conference that ignited a passion for Christ. They decided to name the group The Underground and are in the process of renovating one of the theaters so that they can have a place to reach their unchurched friends.
In the Summer of 2006, Mike felt God calling him to step out in faith and start a church. In January 2007, the church supported their calling from God and prayerfully sent Mike and Lynda Cooke back to Charleston, SC to begin a new church there. Ryan and Shannon Scott, who worked with our youth, moved with them to help plant this new church. We are excited about what God is doing in and through James City Community.
We have been challenged and our faith has been tested with each step and God has been faithful.
